Pictograph or Petroglyph? Which is it?

In Utah there are literally thousands of Native American panels. There are two main kinds of artwork, the Petroglyphs and the Pictographs. The Fremont Indians are the most common. The Petroglyphs are carved or pecked in the stone walls with another rock or hard object. The Pictographs are painted on with a mixture of hematite and animal fats, eggs or some other liquid. This is absorbed in the sandstone and preserved for thousands of years.

The Fremont Indian rock art can be generally found on or near game trails. They are know to contain mountain sheep, hunting weapons, and trapezoidal human figures

A bit of History

As early as 300 A.D., the Fremont Indians were the first known tribe to inhibit what will later be known as Central Utah. The Fremont Indians were a collection of hunter and grower Indians. By 750 A.D. a number of villages had been established. They were watering their fields with a complicated irrigation system.

The Fremont Indians thrived until between 750A.D. to 1250 A.D. then for some unknown, and much guessed at reason they vanished. Some people believe they left because of the the fierce Ute Indians (head bashers). The Ute Indians have also left their mark on the canyon. I tend to think that they left  because of drought. For whatever reasons they did leave their marks on the canyon walls. Remains of their villages can still be found.

Nine Mile

Nine mile has it all. Granaries, petroglyphs, pictographs villages, and even a burial ground. Only if you know where to look. New ruins are being discovered every year.

Range Creek

Until recently this valley was privately owned, and rarely visited. This June I took a tour. I was very impressed with the granaries, and how many there actually was.

Zion's National Park

Rochester Creek Panel

Rochester has the most incredible animals I have ever seen. There is elk, bear, alligators and even what seems to be a hippo on these panels. And its very easy to see. The trail is a bit rough but the short walk is worth it!

Remember Leave No Trace!

The Native American rock art can be ruined if they are touched. Please don't touch, trace, chalk, or wet the panels since this can destroy the artifacts. Please do not pick up or removed any items either. The panels have been here for thousands of years, please help  them remain here for thousands more.
